Benefits of Positive Stress • Secret of Productivity • Yerkes Dodson Law • I see myself as a spiritual person. This can not stop me from learning scientific methods to overcome the obstacles I have inmy life. One of such laws is the Yerkes-Dodson law.

I have written about how I discovered the very root of procrastination. It was a true revelation and helped me learn to appreciate each and every single second that I have and make the most of it.

Unlike other laws that I use only in the situations as they were intended to, I use the Yerkes-Dodson law everyday. I have left 33 years of my life behind.

Looking back I can not brag much about my performance aka productivity. I wish I had found this law earlier when I was born.

Better late than never. I may not be able to go back in time, but I can make this very moment truly special. Someday I will look back and will be proud of this present me doing her best.

HOW I BECAME PRODUCTIVE USING THE YERKES-DODSON LAW • BENEFITS OF POSITIVE STRESS

Like I wrote in one of my posts, one of my favorite ways of wasting my time is to watch YouTube videos. One day I was watching the Big Bang Theory. I am a big fan of one of the main characters – Sheldon Cooper.

In one of the episodes, Sheldon Cooper got stuck. He could not make much progress with his work. Talking to his girlfriend, who is a neurobiologist, Sheldon realized that he had created too much comfortable environment to make any progress.

I have always been fascinated by the way his brain worked, but that comment seriously got me thinking.

“Comfort makes us procrastinate and less productive!?” I remembered why I procrastinated to see if it was true. As always Sheldon Cooper was right.

At that moment Sheldon Cooper discussed the Yerkes-Dodsonlaw with his friends. As soon as I watched that scene, I googled and found all about the law.

WHAT IS THE YERKES-DODSON LAW • BENEFITS OF POSITIVE STRESS

In 1908 Robert M. Yerkes and John D. Dodson invented the inverted U of performance. UNDERSTAND this law well and you will remain productive to the rest of your life.

The Yerkes-Dodson law explains the relationship between different levels of stress and performance. In other words, this law explains how your stress level controls  productivity.

THE MEANING OF THE YERKES-DODSON LAW • BENEFITS OF POSITIVE STRESS

#1 If there is no stress in your life (if nothing challenges you), you end up feeling bored.

#2 Once the level of your stress (challenges) increases, your performance will increase as well. It means that when something (a desire, challenge, ambition and so on) calls you to accomplish something, you will get more done.

#3 When your stress level reaches its peak ( when you feel too much stress and overwhelmed), your performance will drop (you will become less and less productive).

HOW I USE THE YERKES-DODSON LAW

Once I understood the law (it took me a week to understand the law, but I have simplified it for you! You are Welcome!) my next question was, “How can I find my level of stress that makes me more productive?”

I have found the best level of stress that is good for my performance without any lab equipment. To find the optimal level of my stress, I used a bullet journal.

I made a list of the things that I should do everyday to feel productive. Then I started doing all the things that I wrote in my bullet journal.

I had 24 tasks to do everyday at the beginning. I could get them done for a week. The next week my performance dropped again.

I realized that my stress level was too high. So, I reconsidered my to-do list and decided to focus on the things that actually mattered in the long run.

At the moment I have 15 things to do everyday. If you want to know more about that, you can leave a comment. I took one step further and started using a habit tracker.

If you are interested in habit trackers and how to use them or if you need some inspiration to begin, leave a comment below and I will write about it in my next posts.

Thank you so much for reading my blog post! I am always happy to share everything I have learned with you. See you in my next posts xx
